The Best Ski Apps to Download this Season

These days there is an app for everything, even skiing! From the functional to the purely for fun, we have pulled together a list of 7 of our favourites that we think are the best ski apps to download before you head to the slopes this year.

1. Ski Tracks App

First up is Ski Tracks, one of the most popular ski apps out there and easily one of the best. Its main purpose is to keep track of your stats whilst you ski and it’s incredible easy to use. Simply set it up in the morning, then put it in your pocket and forget all about it. The app uses GPS to keep track of pretty much everything you do throughout the day including the distance you’ve skied, your speed (average and your top speeds of the day), and the number of runs you have done, meaning that by nightfall you have a complete picture of your ski day right at your fingertips.

Any photos that you take throughout the day will be automatically placed via GPS to where they were taken on the piste and the app also helpfully breaks down the stats by run meaning you can make an easy comparison of each one.

At the end of the day the app automatically creates visual of map your time on the mountains along with any photos that were taken that can then be shared on social media for your friends back home. Ultimately with all the additional features, the in depth data it provides and the fact that it has relatively low battery drainage, this is a must for any keen skier or snowboarder.

Available on IOS and Android £0.79, £0.79. There is also a lite version that is available for free.

2. Ski Fit App

Our second choice is Ski Fit, and this one is more for the lead up to your skiing holiday rather than one to take with you. Launched by Chamonix based sports physiotherapist and clinical expert Neil Maclean-Martin, this is a video based app and online training programme for people who are serious about getting fit for the mountains. The eight-week training programme is suitable for all levels of ability with its main aim being to develop strength in key muscles as well as improving on flexibility and balance.

3. Geocaching App

Another one that we have also featured on a previous blog post is the official Geocaching App. Geocaching is basicallyone big treasure hunt and once downloaded, the GPS on your phone will help you to locate small waterproof boxes (known as ‘Caches’) that have been hidden throughout the ski areas.

When you’ve found one, record your name in the log book and you might even be lucky enough to find some swappable treasure to take and replace! There are caches located throughout the ski areas in La Plagne, Les Gets and a few in Les Menuires, and it makes for a great family activity to fill an afternoon on the slopes.

Available on IOS and Android, Free version ‘Intro to Geocaching’ and also a paid version at £7.99.

4. Find My Friends App

This one is just for iPhone users and it allows you to easily locate your friends and family whilst out on the pistes. The app tracks your position via GPS and by setting it up to view each other’s locations before you set out for the day you can locate one another as and when required. A great little app for arranging where’s best to meet up for lunch!

Up next is a great snow conditions app for both iPhone and android users. This app provides current snow and weather conditions for over 2000 skiing areas (including all 3 Ski Famille resorts) and also features first-had snow reports from other app users. The app comes with an abundance of added extras including trail maps, resort reviews, skiing news and information on discounts for ski and snowboard kit.

Freshly redesigned for the 2015/16 ski season, the app also allows you to add powder alerts meaning you can be notified when your favourite resorts receive a fresh dusting of snow.

6. Ski Safari App

Not so much a functional app assisting you during your time on the mountains but definitely a lot of fun! This app can be enjoyed by both adults and children alike as it challenges you to last as long as you can against an approaching avalanche as you ski down an endless slope. You can gain speed by performing a wide variety of tricks or by picking up ‘vehicles’ that range from penguins and yetis to snowmobiles. Of course, various obstacles (rocks, ski cabins, ect.) stand in your way to slow you down. With decent graphics, responsive controls and a good amount of content, this app is great for getting excited in the lead up to your skiing holiday, or just to keep your little ones quiet on the plane!

7. Ski Resort Specific Apps

Whichever resort you are heading to this winter, it is likely that it will have its own resort specific app containing all the necessary information you will need for a week on the slopes. For Ski Famille guests, Les Gets is covered in the official Les Portes du Soleil app, whereas both Les Menuires and La Plagne each have their own designated app solely for the resorts themselves. All three apps contain an abundance of resort specific information from the opening times of slopes and lifts, the location of mountain restaurants, emergency numbers and even event calendars.
